TULISAN NUSANTARA

Writers’ Residency

Established in 2025, Tulisan Nusantara—"Words of the Archipelago"—is a writers' residency based on Cempedak, focused on ecological themes.

Led by artistic director Ken Kwek and co-directed by Pam Ng, the residency is guided by the principles of immersion, interaction and inscription and provides a platform for new and established Southeast Asian writers to explore the history and culture of the Riau Archipelago. During their stay, writers engage with the local community through readings, discussions and nature walks, and produce a ‘Cempedak monograph’—a short story, poetry series or essay.

PAST WRITERS

Rahim Laut // A Sea Womb

Residency Period:

Jun 2027 - Jul 2027

Hamidah

Residency Period:

Jan 2026 - Feb 2026

I stir to the sound of the azan from the neighbourhood mosque. I usually sleep right through it but this morning it cuts through my dreams. I do the unhealthy thing of picking up my phone right off the bat.

The WhatsApp from Abah says: “I read your article. Good luck.”

Is he worried about how the Islamic authorities—the religious gestapo, as I see them—will react? Is he being ominous? Sarcastic? Playful? I curse the inscrutability...

The World Narrowed to a Slit: Of Hornbills and Love

Residency Period:

Dec 2025 - Jan 2026

There was a knocking on my window when there shouldn’t have been.

On a remote island in the middle of the Riau Archipelago, mornings usually arrived without interruption. There were no vagrants wandering the streets begging for alms, no vendors loudly hawking their snacks, no choirs offering to sing Christmas carols when the season had already passed...

The Last Dugong Hunter

Residency Period:

Aug 2025

The hunter paddles into the night, hook-blade spear close at hand. Panning his head from side to side, he casts his eyes across the water, looking out for the slightest of ripples. His ears, too, await a signal in the enveloping silence. But he detects no major sign of movement—not here, not yet. He navigates further into the darkness, tracing invisible feeding trails. He waits. Minutes roll into an hour, and then two. He moves to light a cigarette but suddenly stops, catching his own restlessness...

Each quarter, a writer from Southeast Asia is invited to stay on Cempedak Island. Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the stories of the Riau Islands, resident writers immerse themselves in the historical, cultural and environmental issues of the region and produce a monograph published on our website. Guests are invited to join them for informal discussions and to share in their exploration of ecological subjects through literature.
